Vision Quest

Chilly —  January 22, 2017 — Leave a comment

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” Luke 6:46-49

For the last 15+ months, I’ve been doing FOUNDATION work.  Which involved gently & methodically removing debris from previous culture, while at the same time moving forward (as best I could) with a new vision, all-the-while STILL pouring foundation.  We’ve had some cracks occur, which required going back and, AGAIN, tearing things up & settling things down.  MUCH SLOWER process than I could have ever dreamed.  Frustrating.  But, with some rewards…

Vision bypasses circumstances. Your current circumstances do not determine where you end up. They only define where you start.” Jim Tressel

I want to LOVE & LEAD my family, ministry and circle of influence to NEW levels of Joy & Impact! Our lives should THRIVE! And, I am committed to seeing it become healthy and holy. Specifically, at //Spyn Student Outreach, we have shifted from an inward focused group to an community focused outreach. We are making methodical steps to ensure that we make disciples who make disciples who make disciples. We are bringing greater training and accountability to leadership BOTH adult and students.  We are also striving to be more visible and active in MHC which we pray will be a catalyst to bringing more passion, energy and life to the whole church. I also see our young adult ministry blowing up to impact our community and college campuses!

“Is God’s comfort too little for you? Is his gentle word not enough?  What has taken away your reason? What has weakened your vision” Job 15:11-12

We want people to see, crave & grasp our vision clearly, creatively, & continually.

So, whenever I’m attempting to cast vision with those in my life, I try to use the following checklist:

  • Clarity: brings understanding to the vision (answers what the people must know and what you want them to do)
  • Connectedness: brings the past, present, and future together
  • Purpose: bring direction to the vision
  • Goals: bring targets to the vision
  • Honesty: brings integrity to the vision and credibility to the vision-caster
  • Stories: bring relationships to the vision
  • Challenge: brings stretching to the vision
  • Passion: brings fuel to the vision
  • Modeling: brings accountability to the vision
  • Strategy: brings process to the vision
(From The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, by John Maxwell)

Vision is a process. A frustration. A mission. Imperfect. Necessary.  LIFE.

And, this is the quest I’m on right now…

True Discipleship

Chilly —  February 11, 2016 — Leave a comment

In the Fall of 2016, I will be launching: //SpynOne — a 9 month, full time, high impact, hardcore, discipleship ministry. I am inviting post-high school students from around the world to invest ONE year of their life with me and my amazing team here in Lansing, Michigan! It will be the adventure of a lifetime!

… with this in mind,  I’m thinking, breathing, praying, talking and dreaming
about discipleship ALL the time.  Here’s a peak inside my heart and head …

  • Authentic discipleship MUST be more than a church program.
  • It must be more than a bullet list of required Bible verses, prayer routines and outreach events.
  • It can’t be contained in a book, classroom or church building.
  • It’s messy, difficult, painful, time consuming, demanding, lonely and thankless.
  • You’ll want to quit discipleship at some point. Most do in fact.
  • An authentic disciple of Christ is a soldier in active duty in a war against the greatest enemy of all time.
follow meIn John 6, right after the feeding 5,000+ people and walking on water, Jesus sits down with a large group of people who considered themselves to be disciples. He talked about how He was the bread of life — at this point you can almost hear the “amen’s” but He goes on to say that you can’t really be His disciple unless you eat his flesh and drink his blood. What?? Was He advocating cannibalism? Of course not! Jesus was saying that to be His follower, you must be willing to pay the same price that He was about to pay. LIFE. We must be completely expendable for God’s purpose and will. We must understand that it’s God who makes all things possible. Jesus laid it out there, He honestly made the cost clear and… “At this point many of His disciples turned away and deserted Him” (John 6:66).

They bailed… deserted… QUIT!

Back in the Race!

Chilly —  February 8, 2016 — 2 Comments

Fresh starts are AWESOME! Last night, we had the amazing opportunity to pray with over 25 students who invited Christ to come into their lives as Lord and Savior! BOOM! I love these moments!  But, if we’re not careful we begin to think (and act) like accepting Christ is the finish line rather than the starting line! It’s a beginning!  And, now the race becomes exciting!

We’re into our 2nd month of 2016 and maybe some of us have already dropped the ball on some New Year’s resolutions or goals.  SO WHAT?! Refuse to quit or feel sorry for yourself. Get up and get going fresh & new TODAY… RIGHT NOW! IF you’re still breathing, than the race isn’t over — RUN!

blogrunningprogI don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:12-14

The best way to forget about what’s behind is to pursue what’s ahead!

I want to help you (and me) enjoy the Christian Life WAY MORE than I ever have before!   Continue Reading…

Living a Riddle.

(and if you left a previous comment, feel free to update us with what’s up now!)

Have you ever found yourself absolutely lost right in the middle of God’s perfect will? It’s like you totally know that He has you where He has you for a purpose — there’s obvious signs that there’s destiny in your existence — and yet, there’s so much uncertainty and wonder. It’s not a fear thing, or even a confusion thing; because God’s right there. And yet, you still find yourself holding your breath at times as you stare into space searching for significance and some sort of structure that puts everything into perspective.

LifeIsRiddleYou are confident of God’s calling but you can’t seem to find the job description, title, position or opportunity to do the things that make you come totally alive. You feel like you’re close… really close but, then again, you’re not even sure that you would know it if you ran right into it. Like lava churning in your heart, when you try to explain what’s happening, even to God, it blows like a volcano in all directions, loudly, quickly and recklessly.

So, you press on. Serve. Listen. Wait…

I don’t want those who read this to think I’ve lost my mind, but then again, I certainly don’t want them to think I’ve got it all together either. In the last year I’ve been called ‘pastor’ at two great churches, I’ve also been called: husband, father, son, brother, leader, minister, presbyter, entrepreneur, mentor, speaker, coach, friend, neighbor, director, reverend, staff, evangelist, barista, discipler and captain. That’s a lot of hats to wear! And, I’m still not sure that I’m doing all that I’m supposed to be doing (or not doing). Continue Reading…
