Confessions of an Urban Missionary – 2

Chilly —  January 8, 2013 — 16 Comments

Again, this post is simply some honest thoughts about church planting, Detroit life, urban missions, leadership, family, etc … mostly what’s written is raw & unrehearsed. Not meant to anger or confuse. Just being vulnerable.

ghettoCoffee1] Sometimes I get harassed because I talk about coffee so much. No, I’m not an addict. Seriously, I drink about 1-2 cups ALL day. However, I manage Courage Coffee — it’s a way that we serve our community on a daily basis and raise money to support our outreach. So, I use some of my social media outlets to promote our products — which, in my opinion, are the BEST in Detroit!

2] Excellence honors God and reflects His purpose.

3]  Ok, I get it… you’re glad NOT to be in our church or on my team any more. Why go to such extremes to tweet, instagram or facebook your FREEDOM? What are you trying to prove and who are you trying to prove it to? Seriously. IF you’re SO alive and happy, GOOD! Stop trying to make a point and BE a disciple of Christ! By the way, when a child throws a fit and finally gets it’s way, everyone (including the child) ultimately suffers… just saying. Do more, BE MORE or be quiet.

4]  Are we like the ‘Citizens of Nazareth’ (from my journal today): “And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.” (Mark 6:5, 6 NLT) — did you catch that? Jesus was “amazed at their unbelief!” Is this what amazes Jesus with our culture? Is this what amazes Him about YOU?

5]  Hockey is BACK! Yes, it’s a shortened season. Millionaire players & Billonaire owners are done fighting about how rich they get off us fans! I know, I know, I should be jaded! But, I love the Redwings! I love living in “Hockeytown, USA”! And, it’s always so exciting in the city during the playoffs (which we have made for 21 straight years)! I probably won’t make a game LIVE but I’m still glad to see Zetterberg, Datysuk, Kronwall, Helm & Howard back on the ice!

6]  Momentum is a funny thing. Right when you sense it, you begin to wonder where it went. It’s hard to find the BIG WAVE or ride the little ones! I really feel like we’re in a good place and things are really good. Yet, I haven’t found that rush that says THIS IS IT! So, I keep paddling, riding whatever little wave I feel and waiting for the lift of God’s tsunami! (Sorry for the surfter analogy – hopefully it makes sense?)

7]  I was reading C.S. Lewis today and was profoundly challenged by this thought… “The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of.” Stay alert, my friends, God is working NOW in order to blow your mind LATER … so, wherever you are – BE ALL THERE! Serve, love, sacrifice, obey, pray, listen, give and die to self… a life-altering miracle has already begun – be sure you’re ready & courageous when it is ready to shout!

IF you want to comment about any of the points, please reference the number(s) in front of the point, so that we know what you’re referring to. Stay tuned for “Confessions of an Urban Missionary – 3″ next week.

#1 – I came to Courage Coffee this morning and had a delicious Sulawesi! Reminded me of when I got to go to Indonesia 7 years ago!

#7 is so true! Today is a deposit with lots of interest in the future if we’ll use today and be all there!

    • Yes, Chris, the Sulawesi is phenomenal – glad Courage Coffee can serve as your neighborhood coffee house! ;)

And, YES, today expires & never returns — we must LIVE it while it’s here!

  4. Needed to hear #6 tonight! Love you!

  5. Chilly, I don’t really know you..but would like to. I just wanted to encourage you in the ministry where God has you. My stepson, who lives a little west of Detroit was here over Christmas. I get up to visit him 1 or 2 times per year, so I might get a chance to meet you. BTW, I live in southern Missouri. Recently I keep seeing stories about Detroit. Driving home from a trip last week, I heard a radio program all about Detroit. i felt that God showed me that He has special plans for that city and you are strategically placed there for such a time as this. I can’t share all that’s in my heart right now, but I believe God is preparing you, the people with you and the whole area for some exciting things.
Be encouraged! Be blessed! I’ll share more later.
    A brother, Phil

    • Phil, thank you so much for: a) reading my blog, b) sharing what God has spoken to you about our ministry and our city, and c) praying for us! I, too, sense that God is about to do something significant here and I’m preparing my heart & church for His next move!

I look forward to hearing more from you! By the way, my parents also live in southern Missouri! Cool! God bless, Chilly

  6. I love you!….Straight out said it just like that! Praying and Believing in great things!

  7. 7. When you said, “God is working NOW in order to blow your mind LATER,” that really hit me. Doing things now may seem pointless, but God is going to use these things to change lives. This is really exciting. Thanks Pastor Chilly for sharing!

  8. I hope it’s ok that I join your confession… Your honesty prompted me to be honest too.

Number 7 seems too good to be true right now. And I don’t know if its time to move or to wait.
