Don’t Call it a Come Back!

I’m not DEAD!

In fact, I’M MORE ALIVE THAN I’VE EVER BEEN!!

Recklessly AbandonedAfter almost 14 years planting churches, building friendships, reaching communities, training ministers, loving teenagers and raising leaders in Michigan (11+ years in Detroit and 2+ years in Lansing); God is leading me and my family to Burlington, Vermont!  I will be launching a community-based student outreach called Revolution Youth in the most unchurched community in America.  Read previous post, Life Update, for details.

When I was young in ministry, I often said “I’m youth ministry for life” and I would quote Psalm 71:18, Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” … I believed this and, back then, “old” seemed like forever away! Then, our church planting, being a lead pastor and presbyter and other grown-up stuff happened. Not to mention changes in my family! LIFE happened! So,   was I wrong? Did God change His mind? Was it immature or irresponsible to stay in youth ministry?  Was I chasing some fictional fountain of youth??

Absolutely not. Even when serving in those roles, my heart, style, approach and passion continued to have a youth edge and emphasis. I believe in the next generation! I love millennials and generation z!  They must be the heart of the church today because they are the hope for the church tomorrow — I believe this!

So, here I am, in over-my-head in crazy, faith-required, youth ministry…

God’s timing is perfect. The seasons & roles leading up to this were right (obeying God always is). I wasn’t wrong about the serving the other roles — they were character building and helped me mature in ways I didn’t even know that I needed. And so, YesI’m still living THE DREAM (which happens to be satan’s nightmare)!! With this in mind, I thought I might share a few lessons – in no particular order – that I’ve learned through all of this…

    • Tell A Vision — don’t be afraid to share the vision God gives you! Share it with your team, staff & supporters. Yeah, I’m sure over the last 14 years some have thought “yeah, right, it’s never gonna happen” — maybe even a few rolled their eyes. But it DID happen! And this teaches us that God’s timing is perfect and that perseverance builds character, trust and loyalty. And, doing your current assignment with all your heart qualifies you for the next assignment. Don’t get ahead of the vision.
    • Revel in ANY Win — sometimes the thought of winning Detroit for Christ seemed insurmountable or raising the capital to fund the BIG vision is so daunting. And, now, reaching 1000’s students seems ridiculous!! So, focus on what you can do TODAY, this week, this month… find joy in the little victories (which often are way bigger than your realize)! When you begin to experience win after win after win, you’ll believe for bigger things and you’ll create the momentum & confidence needed to GO FOR IT! Plus, it sets an atmosphere of joy!
    • Laugh at Yourself  A LOT — oh wow, I’ve said and done some things that are simply ridiculous! They make for a great story and, hopefully, build camaraderie amongst my team but not every idea works, not every sermon rocks and not every outreach wins. But, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, right?! Face it, some things don’t always work or maybe something work only once. Don’t get locked in on methods — ONLY the message is sacred!
    • Disciple — be personally involved in making disciples and stick with it until your disciples can make disciples who make disciples! Then make more!! This will produce life, love and purpose inside of you and will bring about cool changes in your own walk with God! You can’t simply delegate this or allow it to become a program. Our Lord’s last few words before ascending told us to do it — He’s going to ask us about it — so, DO IT and do it well. Because of my heart for discipleship, I’m NOT moving to Vermont alone! No way, I have 3 young adults stepping up & stepping out of their comfort zones to join this amazing adventure! Discipling them and seeing them thrive has been and will continue to be one of my greatest joys! And, more are being raised every day!!
    • Plant the Flag —  In our short-attention culture, it’s hard to find people who stick with anything for very long… I think we must learn to plant the flag. To take our stand and be determined to STAY until the task is complete – no matter who leaves you, no matter how big the other offer is, no matter how frustrated you get, no matter how bad it hurts, no matter what advice you’re given… fight to be faithful and fight to finish! And, by the way, the first and best flag you plant should be ALL white: Surrender! He can take it from there!  In fact, our logo for Revolution Youth is based on a white flag…

I may be adding more to this tomorrow but I wanted to just throw down a few things to get you thinking. Feel free to jump on any of these points in the comments. I’d love to hear where you’re at in all of this… please invite others to the conversation too by using one of the social media buttons below this post or top of the site). And, after reading this, IF you feel a tug on your heart be part of our adventure in Vermont (in prayer, with finances or even, in person); I would LOVE to hear from you!!  Thanks!

I BELIEVE IN YOU!

True Discipleship

Chilly —  February 11, 2016 — Leave a comment

In the Fall of 2016, I will be launching: //SpynOne — a 9 month, full time, high impact, hardcore, discipleship ministry. I am inviting post-high school students from around the world to invest ONE year of their life with me and my amazing team here in Lansing, Michigan! It will be the adventure of a lifetime!

… with this in mind,  I’m thinking, breathing, praying, talking and dreaming
about discipleship ALL the time.  Here’s a peak inside my heart and head …

  • Authentic discipleship MUST be more than a church program.
  • It must be more than a bullet list of required Bible verses, prayer routines and outreach events.
  • It can’t be contained in a book, classroom or church building.
  • It’s messy, difficult, painful, time consuming, demanding, lonely and thankless.
  • You’ll want to quit discipleship at some point. Most do in fact.
  • An authentic disciple of Christ is a soldier in active duty in a war against the greatest enemy of all time.
follow meIn John 6, right after the feeding 5,000+ people and walking on water, Jesus sits down with a large group of people who considered themselves to be disciples. He talked about how He was the bread of life — at this point you can almost hear the “amen’s” but He goes on to say that you can’t really be His disciple unless you eat his flesh and drink his blood. What?? Was He advocating cannibalism? Of course not! Jesus was saying that to be His follower, you must be willing to pay the same price that He was about to pay. LIFE. We must be completely expendable for God’s purpose and will. We must understand that it’s God who makes all things possible. Jesus laid it out there, He honestly made the cost clear and… “At this point many of His disciples turned away and deserted Him” (John 6:66).

They bailed… deserted… QUIT!

Embracing-changeMy family and I are on vacation for a few weeks… so this seems like the perfect time to make a BIG change!

I’m SUPER HONORED by all of you who faithfully read, subscribe and share iChilly.com! With this in mind, we are going to TOTALLY redesign the site: this will include adding podcasts, videos, new posts and guest bloggers. My heart is to create a page specifically designed to provide discipleship, mentorship and leadership opportunities to people at ANY stage of maturity in Christ.  Hope this sounds fun!

SO, we are taking down iChilly.com until early July.  We’ll let you know (via social media) as soon as the site is up!

Too Much Me

Chilly —  June 8, 2015 — Leave a comment

my FIVE heroesSo, here’s some random stuff about me – in no particular order … for the most part, this is an absolutely pointless, random blog  – so many things that you simply DON’T want or need to know. Enjoy (or not)… it’s entirely up to you!

    1. I love seafood and hate cinnamon.
    2. I try to run and eat right every day (don’t laugh).
    3. I’ve jumped off 80′ cliffs but never parachuted from an airplane or bungeed off a bridge.
    4. I’ve been to 49 states – still waiting on Alaska – hmm, you know, I’m not sure IF I’ve been to Oregon – I think I was… so, maybe 48!
    5. Three MUSTS for my vacation: Sun, Surf and Sand. LOVE the beach & ocean!
    6. I’ve almost died a few times – high fever as child – killer bee sting as adult.
    7. I was healed of deafness at age 5.
    8. I started for my college baseball & golf teams (now I hate golf)…
    9. I love single-origin coffee, sourced through artisan roasters, precision brewed via multiple methods (pour-overs, cold press, chemex, etc). And, I’ll still drink Starbucks too!
    10. I’ve shared Christ’s love with people on 4 continents… perhaps more someday.
    11. When I was in Bible College, I was told by a faculty member that I should quit because: “I wasn’t ministry material”…
    12. I’m an Apple guy (MacBook, iPad, iPhone, etc) – never going back to PC.
    13. I get up each morning BEFORE my wife and AFTER my wife… confused?!
    14. The states that I have lived in are: Ohio, California, Tennessee, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan.
    15. When I was a junior in high school I weighed 105 lbs and was only 5’4″ tall. Then I grew 8″ and put on 60 pounds over the summer before my senior year.
    16. Last year I read almost 60 books (plus Bible) … I have lots of eBooks but still love to hold the ‘old school’ paper page books!
    17. I hate reading.
    18. I have over 500 people listen to my podcast each week – I can’t stand to listen to myself for more than 5 minutes – how do the rest of you take it?! Seriously!!
    19. I have only worn a neck tie (aka: noose) 8-10 times since May 2002… weddings…
    20. I buy just about anything/everything on eBay, Amazon or other internet sites – I rarely shop in stores and when I do, it’s an outlet.
    21. A passage that I’m loving right now is, “The whole point of what we’re urging is simply love—love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God. Those who fail to keep to this point soon wander off into cul-de-sacs of gossip. They set themselves up as experts on religious issues, but haven’t the remotest idea of what they’re holding forth with such imposing eloquence” 1 Timothy 1:5-7 msg.
    22. I journal a lot … I think it’s essential to my sanity.
    23. I lived and served in Detroit for ALMOST 11 years — that’s longer than I’ve lived anywhere my entire life! I now live in Lansing, Michigan…
    24. I’M IN LOVE: Jesus, Netta, my kids, my family/friends, my church and my city! I will FIGHT for any of them!!
    25. You’re cool.

Well, that’s it!  I’m done.  Comment about any of these items
or none of them… not sure why I even did the list…  I’m on vacation!
