Overcoming Evil

Chilly —  February 10, 2016 — 3 Comments

Warning: This is a long post (a Bible Study).

You call yourself a hero, do you? Why boast about this crime of yours, you who have disgraced God’s people? All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies. You love evil more than good and lies more than truth… You love to say things that harm others, you liar! But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and drag you from the land of the living… The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, 7 “Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.” 8 But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I trust in God’s unfailing love forever and ever. I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will wait for your mercies in the presence of your people. Psalm 53

Revenge, vindication, retribution, vengeance, justice, and more… ugh!  Ahhhh, we’ve ALL wanted it, asked for it and dreamed of it! No one should be allowed to get away with hurting people, being insensitive, lyin’ like a rug, cruelty to kids and, especially, messin’ with God.  Yeah, yeah, yeah – I know, we all want to act like we only speak those “praiseworthy” statements found in Psalms but IF we’re honest, we get frustrated, ticked off, upset, hurt, heartbroken, bitter (and worse) – and when we do… LOOK OUT! Can you imagine IF others could hear our thoughts? YIKES!

OvercomeEvil_Tee_Design_grandeIn this psalm, David throws down and lets it ALL out. Right away, let me say something important: IF you’re gonna get mad and blow up (verbally), do it with God ALONE.  It IS possible to get angry and not sin — what a relief! Look how the Message puts it: “Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry – but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry” (Ephesians 4:26). When you get angry in God’s presence it won’t last long because you will gain His perspective and understand “Who” is THE vindicator: God, and no one else. Plus, IF He deals too swiftly with the “wicked” – He’ll have to deal with our own wickedness… think about it. Can we trust His justice (and mercy)? Are we willing to wait for His timing? Is it possible to move forward when we don’t see God dealing with the issue?

Weed and Feed!

Chilly —  March 16, 2015 — 2 Comments

vintage-garden-toolsIt’s almost 70º today in Detroit! After enduring the coldest February in 140 years, today feels like mid-summer! And, you can already see tulips and daffodils pushing above the soil. Now is the time that many people find themselves on their hands and knees digging, planting, weeding, watering… you get the picture. We’re exchanging snow shovels for garden spades! It’s time to garden.  New flowers and fresh plants just seem to make everything look better.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my life becoming God’s garden.  I desire new life to push through the cold winter soil of my heart like tulips. Yes, to open my life towards the warm Son and produce a pure, beautiful rose-like aroma that touches the senses of my Lord. Love refuses to remain dormant beneath the surface – that is IF it’s real love: God’s Love. My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love. 1 John 3:18 msg.

Practice it, huh? That means there’s still work to be done…

I must prepare…  I must labor…  I must love.

Gone are the roots of bitterness!  Farewell to the weeds of compromise! I must burn the remnants of previous blossoms!

Then as I allow the seeds of truth, correction and purpose to go beneath the surface, I die to self and allow His newness to begin working in me, through me and out from me to others.

Labor has produced Life.

Humility has produced Hope.

Death has produced Destiny.

Now, I must tend this garden – for the enemy will never concede the loss. No, he will send the weeds, insects, and drought.  I must remain steadfast & strong.  It’s good to know that the Spirit loves the garden even more than me and He will guide my efforts and empower my labors.

So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life. James 1:21 msg.

Q:  What do you need to weed and what do you need to feed?

Name it, Claim it … PROCLAIM IT!

…an honest look at really knowing Christ…

proclaim-itThen he told them what they could expect for themselves: “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat – I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Luke 9:23

1. Many people today CLAIM Jesus Christ.

    • They talk about Christ. You know, everyone’s a “christian”…
    • They do many activities in Jesus’ name. Hookin’ up JC… ugh.
    • Many claim to be followers of Jesus. Until He asks for sacrifice & surrender…
    • However, are they really true disciples?  Where’s the proof…

2. CLAIMING and NAMING Christ is not always Knowing Christ.

    • Claim Christ as Savior, but not receiving Him as Lord. Free ticket to heaven, please…
    • Claim to receive Christ, yet lives never change, do not become “new creatures in Christ.” I know and that’s what counts… oh really?
    • Claim salvation, but show no desire to know Him better. He knows… we’re cool…
    • Claim to follow Christ, but never any examination of self! Don’t judge me…
    • Claim to bear the cross, but little time for Bible meditation and prayer. It’s a personal thing…
    • Claim to be His child, but never use the gifts He bestows upon us. Don’t need to show off…

3. Christ calls us to die. PERIOD.

    • Christ’s true followers die to self on cross. Bye-bye YOU!
    • Christ’s true followers bear their crosses. Livin’ it LOUD daily!
    • Christ’s true followers are in love with Him. Can’t touch my JOY!
    • Christ’s true followers march steadily and continually forward on the narrow path of life, which leads to true discipleship and a heavenly home. I can look at myself and see ONLY Him!

nail-scarred-handsChrist died for men precisely because men are not
worth dying for; t
o make them worth it.
” C.S. Lewis

HE died in order to make US worth it – what an unbelievably humbling thought. Just take a moment or two and really let this thought sink in…

How can I grasp this kind of love and sacrifice? And, how should I respond? Ultimately, I think the only way to maintain the ‘worth’ He has given me, is to do the very thing He made me to do (and be).

But my life is WORTH NOTHING unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love. Acts 20:24
