Time 4 Change

Chilly —  June 13, 2015 — Leave a comment

Embracing-changeMy family and I are on vacation for a few weeks… so this seems like the perfect time to make a BIG change!

I’m SUPER HONORED by all of you who faithfully read, subscribe and share iChilly.com! With this in mind, we are going to TOTALLY redesign the site: this will include adding podcasts, videos, new posts and guest bloggers. My heart is to create a page specifically designed to provide discipleship, mentorship and leadership opportunities to people at ANY stage of maturity in Christ.  Hope this sounds fun!

SO, we are taking down iChilly.com until early July.  We’ll let you know (via social media) as soon as the site is up!

THANKS FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP, LOYALTY & PATIENCE!

Too Much Me

Chilly —  June 8, 2015 — Leave a comment

my FIVE heroesSo, here’s some random stuff about me – in no particular order … for the most part, this is an absolutely pointless, random blog  – so many things that you simply DON’T want or need to know. Enjoy (or not)… it’s entirely up to you!

    1. I love seafood and hate cinnamon.
    2. I try to run and eat right every day (don’t laugh).
    3. I’ve jumped off 80′ cliffs but never parachuted from an airplane or bungeed off a bridge.
    4. I’ve been to 49 states – still waiting on Alaska – hmm, you know, I’m not sure IF I’ve been to Oregon – I think I was… so, maybe 48!
    5. Three MUSTS for my vacation: Sun, Surf and Sand. LOVE the beach & ocean!
    6. I’ve almost died a few times – high fever as child – killer bee sting as adult.
    7. I was healed of deafness at age 5.
    8. I started for my college baseball & golf teams (now I hate golf)…
    9. I love single-origin coffee, sourced through artisan roasters, precision brewed via multiple methods (pour-overs, cold press, chemex, etc). And, I’ll still drink Starbucks too!
    10. I’ve shared Christ’s love with people on 4 continents… perhaps more someday.
    11. When I was in Bible College, I was told by a faculty member that I should quit because: “I wasn’t ministry material”…
    12. I’m an Apple guy (MacBook, iPad, iPhone, etc) – never going back to PC.
    13. I get up each morning BEFORE my wife and AFTER my wife… confused?!
    14. The states that I have lived in are: Ohio, California, Tennessee, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan.
    15. When I was a junior in high school I weighed 105 lbs and was only 5’4″ tall. Then I grew 8″ and put on 60 pounds over the summer before my senior year.
    16. Last year I read almost 60 books (plus Bible) … I have lots of eBooks but still love to hold the ‘old school’ paper page books!
    17. I hate reading.
    18. I have over 500 people listen to my podcast each week – I can’t stand to listen to myself for more than 5 minutes – how do the rest of you take it?! Seriously!!
    19. I have only worn a neck tie (aka: noose) 8-10 times since May 2002… weddings…
    20. I buy just about anything/everything on eBay, Amazon or other internet sites – I rarely shop in stores and when I do, it’s an outlet.
    21. A passage that I’m loving right now is, “The whole point of what we’re urging is simply love—love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God. Those who fail to keep to this point soon wander off into cul-de-sacs of gossip. They set themselves up as experts on religious issues, but haven’t the remotest idea of what they’re holding forth with such imposing eloquence” 1 Timothy 1:5-7 msg.
    22. I journal a lot … I think it’s essential to my sanity.
    23. I lived and served in Detroit for ALMOST 11 years — that’s longer than I’ve lived anywhere my entire life! I now live in Lansing, Michigan…
    24. I’M IN LOVE: Jesus, Netta, my kids, my family/friends, my church and my city! I will FIGHT for any of them!!
    25. You’re cool.

Well, that’s it!  I’m done.  Comment about any of these items
or none of them… not sure why I even did the list…  I’m on vacation!

ReFocus

Chilly —  October 16, 2014 — 11 Comments

Today I deactivated my Facebook account.

Gasp! What?! Why??

I know, I know! Crazy, right?!

I had 4,211 Facebook friends. I was Administrator of 4 Facebook pages and 2 Facebook groups. Probably had a combined influence of nearly 10,000 people.  And…

I’m done.

I could give you several personal, specific, reasons for this action. We had some security concerns and I made a decision best for my family.  I also made the decision to refocus my time, attention, interactions and rest.

Here’s a few other questions or thoughts that played into this decision:

  • quitting-facebookWhy do we spend so much time trying to maintain relationships, statuses and expectations of people online and so little time loving and serving our family, neighbors and community?
  • How much time do we waste or sleep do we lose lost in social media?
  • Do you have any idea of how many potentially dangerous entities exist on the other side of our computer screen or handheld device? Have you looked closely at these sites on your spouse’s or children’s smart phones and laptops? A few sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouNow, Kik, Youtube, Vine, Vimeo, Pinterest, OooVoo, Pheed, Wanelo, Reddit, and MORE! Overwhelmed yet? Any of these could introduce loved ones to predators, pornography, fraud or worse!
  • Yep, I know there’s good things that happen via social media — that’s why I’m not telling you to stop. I’m telling ME to back off and refocus. I’m evaluating each media application and seeking to minimize my activity and accessibility.
  • The people who truly love you and desire to know, WILL CONNECT WITH YOU. Rather than a random, “hey you” that leads to hours of mindless chatter rarely producing authentic relationship, focus on people you can look at, touch and do life with…
  • Facebook was step one. I’m evaluating ALL applications and sites. I’m excited to simplify.
  • It’s ok to use social media but DON’T let it use you.

Well, that’s my street corner, megaphone, blog-post rant. Are you still here??  Yeah? Cool! Then let me throw a couple verses at you that I’m meditating on today:

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:2-3

IF you still want to be connected online, you can subscribe to this blog – there’s a place for your email address in the top right. I’d also welcome a coffee in person sometime!

Thanks again for being in my life — for praying for me, reading my stuff and spurring me on! My life is enriched through true friendships!  Love, Chilly

Hmmm…

TEN random questions or thoughts:

Hmmm1. Does anyone ever go to a car dealership seeking to purchase a MAROON car?
2. Are you ever truly clean after taking a bath?
3. Why do baseball coaches wear uniforms? Imagine it in football, basketball or hockey??
4. “My kid is an honor student” bumper stickers = lame. ALL kids are great!
5. Going to Starbucks or Target is not Yoga – so why are you wearing yoga pants?
6. As a man ages, he loses hair on his head & gains hair in his ears & nose… Why?!
7. If church is ‘people’, why spend millions on buildings, steeples, stain glass & pews?
8. Country music… huh? My ears are bleeding just thinking about it!
9. When I was a kid I could eat pizza, ice cream & potato chips; now, instant 5lbs & a cavity!
10. How can someone look at creation & not believe in a creator?

In the comments, feel free to comment about any of these OR add your own random thought.
