Stupid & Rude

Listen BIGGERWe suck at listening sometimes… a lot of times… well, to be honest, most of the time. We have so much competing for our attention, that’s it’s difficult to sit and remain focused & respectful while someone is speaking to us.  We look around, cut them off, play with our smartphone or start thinking of our answer without hearing clearly what is being said.

We probably do that with God too – that is, IF we even consider the thought that He may have something to say.  Today as I was reading Proverbs 18 (from the Message), a verse really hit this point out of the park…

Answering before listening is both stupid and rude. v.13

Sounds simple, right?  But does it happen?
Are we stupid and rude? Hmmm…  Most people aren’t looking for us to solve their problems or sum them up, they just want to know that we love them enough to patiently listen – to hear them out.  And, what about God? What does He have to do to get your attention?  How would He grade your listening skills?

My wife is such a GREAT listener — her example always helps me with this area! Do you have a good listener who you can learn from? Seek them out & then pay attention (yes, LISTEN)!

I’ve got work to do…

  • why is listening so difficult?
  • what percent of your conversations are ‘real‘?
  • how can you improve today?
  • huh??

Reaching for the Q-Tips,

Noise Traffic

… a previous conversation between me and God.

I, normally, don’t mind noise, craziness, or even chaos – I seem to thrive under those kinds of circumstances! I mean, c’mon, I live and work right in the heart of Detroit and I have 5 kids and a dog! It’s a crazy-fun-noisy-little-world I live in! I love it!

Yet sometimes, even for me, there seems to be an inner calling for peace… I guess I just need things to chill a bit in order to really concentrate and hear what’s being said or grasp the bigger picture.  Vision is blurry or dim when decibels and distractions are out of control.

God speaks…
“lately, Chilly, it’s been difficult for me to enjoy our time together – all the noise inside your head – the questions, comments, second-guessing, vain arguments, over-thinking, blah-blah-blah, it’s all too much!”
        – yeah, He speaks to me like this.  Continue Reading…

Hearing Test

Have you ever thought about the difference between hearing and listening?

Sometimes when I pray or when I’m reading God’s Word, I’ll say to myself, “Whoa, that’s deep” or, “Mmm, I hear what You’re saying” or, “that’s SO good” or, occasionally, just a spiritual sounding “amen” — then I leave it at that and do nothing. Ouch! That’s NOT listening.  When we really listen, we strive to apply and ultimately obey what we hear.
Look at what God says to the prophet Ezekiel:
“Then He said, get all these words that I’m giving
you inside you. Listen to them obediently.
Make them your own” Ezekiel 3:10 msg.
3 ways to  REALLY listen:
  • get the words inside you ~ meditation
  • listen to them obediently ~ motivation
  • make them your own ~ ministry
Did you notice how these three steps lead from thought to action? From thought to obedience! Are you HEARing me?? Let’s take a few minutes today and use a spiritual q-tip to clean out our sticky, stubborn hearts!
A few questions:
  • What causes YOUR spiritual deafness?
  • How can you make sure that you MOVE from listening to hearing?
  • What did you HEAR God say today during prayer or devotions?
Well, time for me to shut up… again!
