My son, Maximus, has mastered the sign language alphabet and now loves to stick his hand around the corner and spell something — the problem is that no one else know sign language. So, he has to blurt out what he just spelled! He’s so smart and cute — LOVE him!
I was thinking about this tonight as I was studying the Bible. I felt like God said something simple & profound – He’s so good at that! Here’s what I heard:
Sign language is for deaf people… those who
HEAR God don’t need signs to confirm it.
So often we hear God but then refuse to obey unless He follows up His original word with some sort of sign… call it a confirmation, a fleece, an ‘amen’ or a challenge. Really what we’re saying is:
- I’m not sure I really believe what He said, or
- I think I heard what He’s saying but need proof, or
- I know what I heard but I really don’t want to do it.
Obviously, these examples speak to our lack of trust, our fear or, even, rebellion.
Sure, God does at times confirm His Word… He does so to add blessings and confidence to our obedience, however, He certainly is not obligated to perform for us… and we shouldn’t ask Him to. Sometimes we’re like Thomas saying, I won’t believe or won’t respond or won’t obey UNLESS “________________”… but hear the words of Jesus,
“So, you believe because you’ve seen with your own eyes. Even better blessings are in store for those who believe without seeing” John 20:29.
Friend, when you hear God speak – leap to obey – IF He chooses to bless you with a sign, cool! But IF not, do it anyways and do it quickly.
Live the adventure called: FAITH.
A living Sign of God’s blessings,
